The world’s largest and most valuable “flawless” diamond has been placed on the auction block by Christie’s auction house, and could be yours… if you have millions in disposable income. The diamond will be put up for auction as part of the Magnificent Jewels sale, which will be hosted at the Four Seasons in des Bergues, Geneva.
The diamond, which was originally carved from a 236 carat rough stone found in Jwaneng Mine, Botswana, is expected to sell for $20 million dollars. The stone is more than double the carat size of the next largest “flawless” diamond. That diamond was auctioned off not long ago for $9.4 million dollars. Christie’s representatives have estimated that the diamond could fetch much more than the $20 million depending on the market.
Of all the diamonds in the world that weigh more than one carat but less than two, experts believe that fewer than 600 of them are “flawless.” Not surprisingly, “flawless” diamonds over 10 carats are even rarer. But the 101.73 carat pear-shaped diamond is in another class entirely, even when taking into account the other 600 ‘flawless’ diamonds known to existence. In fact, it may be the only one of its kind!
The Gemological institute of America—the foremost authority on diamonds, stones, and pearls—graded the pear-shaped diamond with the highest colour and clarity. “Flawless” diamonds over 100 carats are extremely rare, as few are able to meet the strict criteria of perfection. Diamonds are judged on colour and clarity, and are graded from a range of D for a colourless diamond to Z for a diamond with a slight brownish or yellowish colour. The clarity of a diamond is based on the amount of blemishes and inclusions that are actually in the stone. If a diamond has no blemishes and receives a colour grade of D, then it is considered “flawless.”

“Just as a great artist is able to ‘see’ a masterpiece in a block of marble, a perfect diamond is the result of the skill and vision of a master cutter who is able to uncover the beauty from a rough gem,” said Rahul Kadakia, the head of jewellery for Christie’s. “Christie’s Geneva will offer for sale this wonderful pear-shaped diamond of 101.73 carats, which has literally been sculpted like a work of art. This diamond is in its scale, quality and rarity one of the most beautiful ‘white’ diamonds Christie’s has ever had the honour of offering for sale.”
Cullinan I is the most well-known diamond in the world that bears a pear shape. It’s colourless and a whopping 530.20 carats, which also makes it the largest colourless diamond in existence. The stone is a part of the Crown Jewels of Britain and is a type II A diamond.
The auction will take place May 15, and the bidder that successfully purchases the over 100 carat diamond will be given the honour of naming it as well. Hopefully they’ve been giving it some thought, because if you’re buying the world’s largest flawless diamond, you’d better make sure it has a good name.
Diamond enthusiasts or anyone with $20 million dollars lying around can follow the auction live and even bid on items from the Christie’s website. The auction house’s online program offers real-time bidding and auction coverage for their worldwide events, and allows their potential customers to be a part of the exciting and unique event.
